The way our spaces are organized communicates a great deal.
With a huge helping hand, I re-organized my office, making the center conference table the focus of the room and sliding my desk to the side.
I rarely sit at my desk anyway – it communicates a sense of power which I found inappropriate for my role as lead learner. I instead hold nearly all of my meetings at my table. However, by shrinking the size of the table, I hope to make it more intimate and further increase the way I communicate a sense of equality and communion in coming together with partners, teachers, parents, and students.
For my role as a counselor and disciplinarian, I set up a couch and chair space for conversations that should be two-way – listening and talking.
Next (long-term) step – switching from a rectangular table to a circular one and adding a carpet to the back area of my office.
