Over the last (almost) three years, I have subbed in many of our grades – for the day and for selected time periods. Teachers call out sick or have appointments and the principal tends to be the one on call.
Is it worth it?
Pros:
It was a fantastic way to get to know (and keeping knowing) the students.
It keeps your feet wet in the classroom.
It enables easier empathy with teachers.
It builds a sense of community with parents.
It saves time and money in finding an appropriate sub.
It helps some staff see the business of a principal’s life.
Cons:
It is stressful. The role of a principal doesn’t cease just because you are subbing. You need to be able to prioritize and manage well.
It can be a time suck.
Overall, I think it has been super worthwhile. There are some weeks or days, though, where I just want to jump ship and run away! I think the key is building strong time management systems for yourself, strong network of supports across the staff, and a sense of community/support so that if you can’t sub, others can step in.
